Applying for a Grant
Applications for 2024 Project Grants now closed.
The Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) Intensive Care Foundation is a charity, founded over 30 years ago by ICU clinicians in both countries. Our annual grant program has always supported researchers and now supports clinician educators, and promising leaders of the future. Our annual grant program has a successful history of funding research projects. We have diversified recently into supporting education projects and personal development as well.
The Foundation seeks Expressions of Interest (EOI) to apply for a grant. The best and brightest clinician researchers and clinician educators from ICUs around ANZ welcome to apply.
2024 GRANT CATEGORIES
Any meritorious and scholarly project that helps the Foundation achieve our mission is eligible for our funding. Our mission is to improve the care, treatment, and quality of life of critically ill people in Australia and New Zealand through research, education, and promoting awareness of intensive care in the general community.
In 2024, we will award grants in 3 categories:
1 EDUCATION PROJECTS
We will fund the development and dissemination of educational products, and education-related research pertinent to caring for critically ill patients in ICU. Examples of educational products include learning packages, videos, and online resources. Maximum grant AUD$50000.
2 RESEARCH PROJECTS
We continue to fund research projects up to AUD$50000, with an emphasis on supporting early career investigators. We also provide seed funding for pilot projects that are backed by good teams with good ideas, capable of major grant success (eg NHMRC) in future.
3 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CLINICIAN EDUCATORS
We award scholarships (maximum AUD$5000) to support the personal and professional development of early career clinician educators with bright future prospects in health professional education.
nb. Applications for personal development scholarships open on 1 June 2024.

2024 PROJECT GRANT ELIGIBILITY (RESEARCH + EDUCATION)
Essential Criteria
- Early career. The applicant, or at least one member of a project team is early in their career. Early career can be defined in clinician, researcher, or educator terms. Applicants will be asked to provide a short narrative description of why they think they qualify.
- Interprofessionalism. The project team displays interprofessionalism, defined as more than one ICU profession or craft group that work together providing care to critically ill patients in ICU (e.g. medical, nursing, allied health).
- Feasibility. There is a reasonable expectation that the project will be completed within 3 years of being awarded a grant.
Desirable Criteria
The chief investigator is an early career** researcher, or educator.
- Interprofessionalism. Multiple professions and clinical disciplines are needed to care for patients in the ICU. We encourage project teams to include as many as possible.
Projects that foster diversity and inclusivity. This may apply to the project team, the topic, or the times and places that the project’s output will be made available.
Projects that promote fairness and equity. The Foundation especially encourages projects which include the first peoples of Australia and New Zealand, or people in neighbouring low- and middle-income countries.
