Grants FAQ's
Grant FAQ's
These FAQ’s provide guidance for applicants to the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Foundation’s grant and scholarship programs.
Eligibility
Our research grants are designed to support multidisciplinary critical care teams led by Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in Australia and New Zealand. Applicants must be conducting research relevant to intensive care practice and affiliated with an eligible administering institution (such as a university, hospital, or research organisation).
Education grants are open to ICU clinicians, educators, and allied health professionals in Australia and New Zealand who are engaged in intensive care education, professional development or teaching initiatives. Applicants must demonstrate a clear benefit to intensive care education or workforce development.
Educator Development Scholarships are available to individuals working in intensive care in Australia or New Zealand who are seeking to enhance their skills or qualifications in education. These scholarships support short courses, conference attendance, or other training activities that strengthen the recipient’s capacity to deliver high-quality intensive care education. Applicants must demonstrate how the opportunity will contribute to their professional development and benefit the ICU community.
Application Process
EOIs can only be submitted through the online portal linked on the Foundation's website. The opening and closing dates of the annual grant process are available on the website. Please ensure all required fields are completed before submission. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Yes, but each EOI must be for a distinct project. You must also ensure that you have the capacity to deliver each proposed project if multiple projects are successful.
All EOIs are reviewed for shortlisting by a multidisciplinary panel of ICU clinician researchers. All EOI applicants will be notified of the outcome of this review. If your EOI is shortlisted, you will be invited to submit a full project application. You will be asked then to provide more detailed information, including a full project team, comprehensive budget, and supporting documentation.
No. References are not required at the EOI stage. If you choose to include references, they must be contained within the word limit for the project description.
No. All content, including references, must remain within the stated word count. Attachments or images that exceed word limits are not permitted.
Yes, you can find some information to help you prepare your Expression of Interest in advance here:
Project Team
No. The EOI form is designed to collect details only for the Chief Investigator. If your application progresses to the full application stage, you will be required to provide the full project team details at that time.
These grants are intended to support Early Career Researchers, so in most cases the ECR will also be the Chief Investigator listed in the EOI. However, in some instances the Chief Investigator may be a senior researcher supporting the ECR.
No. At the EOI stage, only one Chief Investigator is required. Further team details will be submitted during the full application process.
The Intensive Care Foundation deliberately chooses not to set a fixed definition for “Early Career Researcher” in the grant guidelines. We recognise that career trajectories can vary widely across individuals and disciplines, and we aim to be inclusive of diverse research pathways.
Instead, we ask applicants to include a brief narrative statement within their application outlining why they consider themselves to be early career. This allows applicants to describe their current career stage in their own words and explain how their experience, qualifications, and professional goals align with the intent of an early career researcher.
Budget and Salary Support
Up to AUD $50,000 per research project and up to AUD $30,000 per education project.
Yes. All budget amounts must be inclusive of GST. Please ensure that any applicable taxes are factored into your proposed budget at the time of submission.
If you submit your budget in New Zealand dollars (NZD), the Foundation will convert the total amount to Australian dollars (AUD) using the Reserve Bank of Australia’s reference exchange rate at the time the funding agreement is prepared. The grant will then be paid in AUD at that fixed amount, regardless of any future exchange rate changes.
The $10,000 salary support limit is the total amount that can be allocated to salaries from the grant. It applies to all staff whose time is being supported by the grant to carry out project work or to backfill their usual role. This includes research assistants, project officers or investigators.
It applies to the entire project team combined. The amount must be shared if more than one person requires salary support.
Yes, but only up to $10,000 may be used for salary support. If additional support is required, this will need to come from other funding sources.
No. Statisticians and other service providers (e.g., lab personnel) are considered direct project costs, not salary support. Their costs can be listed separately in the budget.
Yes. These are considered direct project costs and not part of the $10,000 salary support limit.
No. These fees cannot be included in the grant budget.
Reasonable costs for travel directly related to the project, as well as essential equipment or software, may be allowable. These should be clearly justified in the budget and must align with the Foundation’s funding priorities. More detail is required at the full application stage.
Grant Administration
All research and education grants must be administered by an institution (eg university, hospital or research organisation). The funding agreement is signed by an authorised representative of the institution, not the individual applicant.
Yes. The Foundation offers Educator Development Scholarships (smaller grants) that are awarded directly to individuals.
Logos and Acknowledgements
We ask that you acknowledge the Intensive Care Foundation in any publications, presentations, or public communications that arise from your funded work. Suggested wording could include “We acknowledge financial support for this project from the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Foundation. “
