The Intensive Care Foundation (ICF) funds high impact research that is directly improving how intensive care is delivered across Australia and New Zealand. From bedside practices to long-term recovery, ICF supported studies are driving measurable change for patients, clinicians and health care systems.

Better Care at the Bedside

ICF funded research has led to more consistent, evidence-based ICU practices including:

Safer treatment protocols
Research into temperature management, fluid resuscitation and sedation protocols has reduced variation in care and improved clinical decision making.
Improved nutrition and recovery
Studies identifying gaps in ICU nutrition have led to earlier and more effective feeding practices, supporting faster recovery.
Early mobilisation
Evidence showing the benefits of movement in ICU has resulted in patients sitting, standing, and walking sooner, reducing complications and length of stay.

Supporting ICU Staff

ICF research is also strengthening the ICU workforce:

Enhanced training and education
Development of procedural training resources (e.g. chest drains, pacing) is improving clinician confidence and reducing risk.
Better patient communication
Research highlighting communication barriers has increased the use of tools and specialist support, helping staff better understand and care for patients.
Delirium recognition and management
Routine screening and improved sedation practices are now standard, helping clinicians prevent and manage this serious condition.

Improving Patient Outcomes

Most importantly, ICF funded research is improving patient experiences and outcomes:

Fewer preventable complications
Identification of risks such as device-related pressure injuries has led to new prevention protocols, thereby reducing harm to critically ill patients.
Safer recovery after ICU
Research into swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) has introduced routine assessments, preventing complications like aspiration pneumonia.
Better comfort and long-term outcomes
Changes in sedation and pain management mean patients are more awake, experience less delirium, and recover more fully.
Focus beyond survival
Long-term outcome studies are shifting ICU success from survival alone to quality of life after discharge.
