ICF Grant Recipient 2023

Josh McLarty is a senior Intensive Care Trainee based at the Alfred in Melbourne and currently working in Geelong. He is passionate about education and the development of junior health professionals as a means to improve ICU for both patients and staff. Josh is currently the project lead for the “Intensive Education” Animated Video project with Dr Ken Hoffman and Leigh McNichol, which is developing animated educational videos that can be shared with junior intensive care clinicians across Australia and the world.

The Intensive Education project began as a way to de-mystify topics in ICU practice that are often confusing, especially for staff working in ICU for the first time. With the support of the Intensive Care Foundation through a 2023 Education Grant, the project has grown to produce educational videos on topics such as temporary epicardial pacing, ECMO, and inhaled nitric oxide, with many more videos still to come.

The videos are created using an evidence-based educational framework, written and animated by ICU clinicians, and shared for free on the Alfred Intensive Care Academic Centre YouTube channel to allow any clinician to access these great educational resources. Josh and the project team are hopeful that their work will make ICU practice more approachable for junior clinicians joining the ICU workforce, and the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
