Every ICU Journey Has a Story
Behind every intensive care admission is a unique story of resilience, hope and recovery.
The Intensive Care Foundation is privileged to share the experiences of patients and families whose lives have been touched by critical illness. These stories provide a powerful reminder of the impact of intensive care and the dedicated healthcare professionals who support patients through some of their most challenging moments. We are pleased to introduce three new patient stories to our collection:
Lucy Tudehope: A Second Chance at Life
What began as flu-like symptoms quickly became a fight for survival. After spending weeks in a medically induced coma and on life support, Lucy faced a long road back to independence. Her story is a powerful reminder of the life-saving impact of intensive care and the strength that can be found in family, hope and exceptional healthcare. Read Lucy's inspiring story of resilience, recovery and gratitude.
Hugh Burrill: The Power of Life-Saving Research
Following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, Hugh became one of the patients whose life was saved through a groundbreaking ECMO program. From life support in ICU to reclaiming his independence through determination and community support, Hugh's journey highlights the life-changing impact of critical care and the people who make recovery possible. Discover Hugh's inspiring road to recovery.
Eamonn McGill: From ICU student to Medial Student
After spending six weeks in intensive care in a medically induced coma, Eamonn awoke to a world of machines, uncertainty and a long road to recovery. Through eleven surgeries, months of rehabilitation, and the unwavering support of his family and ICU team, he rebuilt his life one step at a time. Read Eamonn's inspiring story of resilience, hope and the life-changing impact of intensive care.
By sharing these experiences, we aim to raise awareness of the realities of critical illness, celebrate recovery, and recognise the extraordinary work of intensive care teams across Australia and New Zealand. These stories are more than personal experiences. They help educate, inspire and connect people who may be facing similar challenges while highlighting why continued investment in intensive care research, education and innovation is so important.
