About us
Australians have a 1 in 2 chance of requiring intensive care at some time during their life, a reality that touches the lives of every Australian family, often more than once.
The need for intensive care can arise for anyone, irrespective of age or state of health due to conditions such as road accidents, burns, trauma, serious illness, severe heart attack, stroke, or pneumonia.
None of us are immune.
Every year over 210,000 people, including 12,000 babies and children, are admitted to Intensive Care Units across Australia and New Zealand.
Today, thanks to extensive and ongoing medical research, over 90% of patients with life-threatening conditions survive with the help of intensive care.
Intensive care can be the difference between life and death. Australia and New Zealand are global leaders in intensive care, with standards, research, and survival rates that set the benchmark worldwide.
The Intensive Care Foundation’s vision is to provide excellence in intensive care. Our ultimate aim is to advance the quality of life, treatment outcomes, and survival rates for those in intensive care, saving more lives across Australia and New Zealand.
The Foundation provides grants for research, education, and professional development for ICU health professionals across both countries.
The Foundation also raises awareness of intensive care throughout the community, highlighting the life-saving work performed daily by intensive care doctors, nurses and researchers who are dedicated to saving lives.
Our work is ongoing, and we rely on the support of individuals and organisations to further advance our efforts.
